I started practicing immigration law in 2004. At that time, HIV + individuals were banned from the US, loving couples lived in exile because our country did not recognize marriage equality, and gender markers on passports/IDs did not match the correct identity for our transgender clients. I also advised corporate clients in bringing talent from around the world, with a focus on having their same-sex domestic partners seek appropriate visas. And I've worked on pro-bono cases addressing the widespread scam of "notarios" targeting my community.
Today, the HIV ban is lifted, Defense of marriage Act (DOMA) is now overturned, and obtaining the correct gender marker on IDs are less cumbersome. However, as we see a concerted effort to strip away these achievements, we stand ready to fight for our client's rights. Join us in this journey.
